In late June, the Embassy—together with partners including Sierra Leone’s Minister of Energy and his ministry, GIZ, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), and NORAD—marked the successful conclusion of two projects: “Energising Development” (EnDev) and “Transformational Energy Use in Sierra Leone.” These projects have enabled 26,400 people across the country to use clean cooking solutions and provided 17,110 people with access to electricity for the first time. In addition, 2,485 small and medium-sized enterprises and 150 social institutions benefited from these modern energy solutions. Particular emphasis was placed on harnessing solar energy—thereby avoiding the depletion of remaining forests for charcoal production—as well as on providing guidance and training for women. Market-oriented approaches and results-based financing played a central role. Much like the example in Sierra Leone, EnDev is regarded as a model project approach in over 20 countries worldwide. A follow-up project (“SURE”) is currently in preparation; further details will be available in the autumn.
